President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that the country’s population will be given free gas for “kitchen and hot water needs” for one year.

The President said that with this, each house will be exempted from the payment of gas consumed every month:

“We will supply up to 25 cubic meters of gas to every house for free within a year.”

According to the Anadolu Agency, the president made this statement at the commissioning ceremony of the gas field in the Black Sea.

According to him, gas will be provided to all houses for free within a month.

The presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey are less than a month away.

The opening ceremony of Black Sea gas exploitation was held at the Filos gas processing complex in Zonguldak province.

Energy independence

According to Erdogan, in the initial stage, Turkey will produce 10 million cubic meters of gas per day.

After the project is brought to full capacity, the volume of produced gas will increase to 40 million cubic meters per day.

The president said that this will cover 30 percent of Turkey’s gas needs.

It is reported that the project was implemented in record time – within 32 months.

Erdogan said that “Turkey has taken a huge step towards energy independence”.

The first offshore gas field on the coast of Turkey was discovered in Sakarya district of Zonguldak province in 2020. After that, gas was also discovered in the nearby Caycima-1 field.

The total estimated reserve of Bunlgar is 710 billion cubic meters.

Turkey, which has practically no gas and oil fields of its own, imported energy carriers from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, as well as liquid gas from Qatar, the United States, Nigeria and Algeria.

In 2021, the gas produced in Turkey, mainly in Thrace, covered only 1 percent of the country’s annual gas needs of 60 billion cubic meters.

Erdogan said that “Turkey has taken a huge step towards energy independence”.

The old leader of the oldest party

Erdogan has been the president of the country for the last 9 years. Before that, he was the prime minister for 11 years.

In the May 14 election, Erdogan’s main opponent will be the 74-year-old leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), Kemal Kılıcdaroğlu.

CHP is the oldest political party in Turkey.

The opposition accuses Erdogan of not being ready to deal with the consequences of the earthquake and not being able to provide the necessary assistance to the victims.

Kemal Kılıcdaroğlu said in one of his speeches that “if there is only one person responsible for this disaster, it is Erdogan.”
