BERLIN —The Municipality of Nuremberg in Germany has decided to ban the propaganda of foreign leaders and parties, following the reactions to the posters of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hung in the city before the elections held in Turkey last month.

With the change in the regulation adopted by the vote in Nuremberg City Council, it was decided not to hang the posters of foreign parties and politicians in public places for the elections held abroad.

In the regulation, it was stated that “For foreign parties and electoral groups, billboards, information stands and other election advertisements for elections and voting of other states will no longer be allowed”.

Nuremberg Municipality declared that Erdogan posters were not against the regulation in the pre-election period and announced that their hanging was allowed on the basis of the principle of equality in the country and within the framework of the “Bavarian State Special Regulation on the Use of Streets, Roads and Squares”.

25 posters with the photo of President Erdoğan were hung in the city.

The posters also included the words ‘Right Time, Right Man’, voting dates and times in Germany and the address of the Nuremberg Consulate where ballot boxes were set.

After the hanging of the posters was reflected in the German media, the issue caused a strong reaction among politicians and social media commentators from different segments.

After the reactions to the Erdogan posters, the municipality had to announce that the relevant law would be changed and that it would prevent foreign parties from making election propaganda.

In Germany, another decision was taken before to limit the reflection of the election process in Turkey to the country.

With the regulation that came into effect in 2017 after AK Party politicians attended rallies and similar meetings in different cities of Germany, the official election campaign activities of officials from non-EU countries for their citizens living in Germany were made subject to the permission of the German government.

In the three-month period before the elections, election campaign activities are not allowed.
