Actor Eric Dane spent the final year of his life working on a posthumous memoir that balances a raw accounting of his Hollywood career, his long battle with addiction, and deeply personal letters written directly to his two teenage daughters. My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, published by Penguin Random House for $32 across its 272 pages, went on sale November 3, 2026, nine months after the actor died in February at age 53 from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS.
From Misdiagnosis to the ALS Diagnosis
Before receiving his terminal diagnosis in 2024, Dane experienced a frustrating medical odyssey that began when he noticed he was gradually losing the use of his right hand, as Page Six reported. He consulted a succession of hand specialists before being referred to a neurologist, who administered an electromyography test—known as an EMG—and initially diagnosed him with multifocal motor neuropathy. Dane described this condition in his book as a rare autoimmune disorder causing extreme muscle weakness that carries a 90 percent effective treatment rate.
When Dane failed to respond to the treatment, his medical team grew alarmed. His primary care physician eventually raised the prospect of ALS, leading the actor to undergo a lumbar puncture, spinal fluid extraction, and brain scans. Upon receiving confirmation of the disease, Dane telephoned his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart.

Gayheart Withdrew Divorce Petition Before Becoming Caregiver
Dane and Gayheart married in 2004, welcomed daughters Billie in 2010 and Georgia in 2011, and separated in 2018. Although Gayheart filed for divorce in February 2018, she formally withdrew her divorce petition in March 2025, and the couple never signed final divorce papers. Following his diagnosis, Gayheart became his primary caregiver, visiting him early in the morning, late at night, and during sleepless hours.
In an interview with NBC special correspondent Maria Shriver on the TODAY show on November 3, 2026, Gayheart recalled that neither she nor her daughters anticipated that a routine hospital admission in February would be his last.
He had gone to the hospital so many times before, and they would patch him up, so to speak, and he would come home. And he’d be OK. And we’d go back to the normal routine, which did change week by week.
Rebecca Gayheart
By the third day in the hospital, the tone of the medical staff shifted, and Dane recognized that he was dying. To comfort him, Gayheart and their daughters camped out in his hospital room, conducting regular family sleepovers complete with battery-operated candles. Speaking about the book’s release, Gayheart told USA TODAY that she hopes readers look past his famous heartthrob role as Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy (2005–2012) and see him beyond McSteamy.
Direct Advice to His Daughters
The most emotional sections of My Book of Days are the chapters addressed directly to 16-year-old Billie and 14-year-old Georgia. Dane broke the fourth wall to offer both practical guidance and poignant life lessons, warning them not to date coworkers and urging them to preserve their time.

Girls, time is precious. Never kill it, or waste it. Preserve it. As we’ve seen, you never know how much time you have left.

In his final chapter, titled The Last Today,
Dane reflected on the physical toll of his illness and his fears regarding the disease’s progression.
Billie and Georgia, I don’t think I’m too afraid of dying. I think what I’m really afraid of is what’s going to happen to me preceding my death. I’m scared of becoming nonverbal and bedridden, unable to move. I fear having a sharp mind still and not having the ability to express myself anymore. And the timing of this disease sucks. I was so looking forward to seeing the women you would become.

He also urged them to marry partners with character and compassion, while unable to resist one final dad joke regarding actor Jacob Elordi, who played his son in Euphoria (2019–2022). Noting that Billie had expressed interest in marrying Elordi, Dane wrote that he officially approved.
