Eric Kjar Named Weber State Head Football Coach After Dominant Run at Corner Canyon

Weber State University has tapped Eric Kjar, a highly decorated high school football coach, to lead its football program, the university announced Tuesday. Kjar, architect of a dynasty at Corner Canyon High School, will attempt to revitalize a Wildcats program that has struggled in recent years.

A Proven Winner Heads North

Kjar arrives at Weber State with an impressive resume, boasting seven state championships as a head coach. He secured titles while leading Jordan High and, most recently, at Corner Canyon, where he built a powerhouse program. The Wildcats’ athletic director, Tim Crompton, expressed confidence in the hire, stating, “Coach Kjar is absolutely the right leader at the right time.” Crompton highlighted Kjar’s “deep Utah roots, proven leadership, and unwavering ability to build a program on a foundation of talent and character” as key attributes for Weber State’s “next era of football.”

Quarterback Factory

Kjar has earned a reputation for developing elite quarterback talent. He mentored both current New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, who played at Ole Miss, and former No. 2 overall NFL draft pick Zach Wilson, a BYU standout. His success in identifying and nurturing college stars has positioned him as one of the most sought-after coaches in the region.

Three-Peat and Beyond

Kjar concluded his tenure at Corner Canyon with a remarkable three-peat, securing state championships in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Prior to this dominant stretch, his team fell short in the 2022 state final against Skyridge. “I’m very excited to be leading the Weber State football program,” Kjar said in a statement. “I believe strongly in the administration and the current roster and the talent in the state of Utah. I know we can build a championship-caliber program at Weber State, and I look forward to the challenge and getting started.”

Rebuilding a Program

Weber State is hoping Kjar can replicate his success at the collegiate level, particularly in recruiting within the state of Utah. The program flourished under former head coach Jay Hill, consistently making deep runs in the FCS playoffs and attracting local talent who went on to play at Power Four schools, including Eddie Heckard, Jack Kelly, and Marc Collins. However, the Wildcats have faced challenges since Hill’s departure for BYU’s defensive coordinator position. Former coach Mickey Mental was dismissed after compiling a 13-20 record over three seasons. The team finished with a 4-8 record this year, failing to achieve a winning season for the second consecutive year.

Kjar’s seven state titles place him among the most successful high school coaches in Utah history, trailing only three coaches who have secured eight championships. His arrival signals a new chapter for Weber State football, one filled with the promise of renewed success and a return to championship contention.
