Erich Honecker usually only gave a fraternal kiss to the heads of state and party leaders of the so-called brother countries. The Desperate Kiss with Leonid Brezhnev is one of the East Side Gallery’s most famous murals. But in the spring of 1990, a few weeks after he had been deposed and even arrested, Erich Honecker kissed a Protestant pastor on the cheek to say goodbye. Uwe Holmer granted Honecker and his wife Margot asylum in his rectory in Lobetal for almost ten weeks.
