“I can say that we are almost in a full-fledged war,” Borrell said before the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
“We are seeing more military strikes, more damage, more collateral damage, more casualties,” he added.
492 people, including 35 children and 58 women, were killed and 1,645 injured in Israeli strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced. In the nearly year-long attacks on the Israel-Lebanon border, such a large number of victims was never seen before.
Israel said it killed a “large number” of Hezbollah fighters on Monday in strikes on 1,300 targets linked to Hezbollah, including a “targeted strike” in Beirut.
“Everybody needs to do their best to stop this,” Borrell said, calling for a solution.
Speaking about the war in the Gaza Strip, Borrell said that “despite all the diplomatic power we have used, nothing has been able to stop the war”. He accused both warring parties of “delaying” the ceasefire talks.
