ESCWA: Libya faces multiple challenges, conflict continues and economy faces risks

by times news cr

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) warned in a recent report that Libya faces multiple risks, including ongoing conflicts, a climate crisis, and economic weakness.

ESCWA pointed out that Libya’s history of conflict and political instability are major factors leading to its weakness, noting that the failure of the elections scheduled for 2022 has fueled tensions and hindered efforts to achieve stability.

The ESCWA report stressed that limited territorial integrity contributes to weak resilience, with weak state institutions reinforcing the fragmented political landscape and allowing armed non-state actors to flourish.

According to the report, Libya also faces serious climate risks, with water scarcity, rising temperatures and extreme events threatening water resources, agriculture and livelihoods.

At the economic level, ESCWA indicates that Libya faces minor risks, with food insecurity as a major factor of vulnerability.

According to the report, Libya faces challenges in the social field, as high unemployment rates, especially among youth and women, contribute to economic deprivation.
