ESET: every fifth email in Russia is sent by scammers

Every fifth email sent to residents of Russia in 2021 was spam distributed by scammers. Coronavirus has become the main topic of spam messages, according to the annual report of the international developer of antivirus software ESET.

“From 18% to 27% of incoming letters (in Russia.— “b”) contained spam and unsolicited information,” the ESET study quoted TASS as saying.

Russia ranks fifth in the global anti-rating of incoming spam messages. The leader in received spam is China, where the rate of such letters is 56%. Singapore is in second place, Argentina is third, and India is fourth.

According to Eset, spam is most often sent from the following countries:

  1. USA (16%);
  2. Japan (13.3%);
  3. China (9.6);
  4. France (7%);
  5. Poland (6.6%).

Fraudsters are increasingly using the topic of COVID-19. For example, Internet scammers offer state benefits and payments to those who have been ill with coronavirus. This is how they lure important information from their victims (phone numbers, passport and bank details).

Former company informed about the possible interception of personal data by cybercriminals through users’ smart watches. Also, ESET warned that scammers started use NFT to steal crypto wallets.
