Daniel Espino, a player for the Cleveland Guardians, will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and will be out for a year.

Panamanian Daniel Espino, the best pitching prospect for the Cleveland Rangers, will be out of action for at least a year after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder.

The Guardians reported that Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles to repair the anterior capsule in the 22-year-old pitcher’s shoulder. El Attrache, the NFL Dodgers and Rams doctor, estimates that Espino has 12 and 14 months off.

Cleveland had high hopes for Espino, who recently stopped pitching because of soreness and inflammation upon returning to play. He has been suffering from arm problems for a year.

How did Espino get to the Guardians?

Espino was taken in the first round of the 2019 draft and quickly rose in the Cleveland Rangers’ system as a result. He struck out 152 in just 91 2/3 innings in 2021.

He was only able to throw 18 1/3 innings last year with the Double-A Akron branch before his season was halted by a diagnosis of tendinitis.

Espino was considered the best of a promising crop of Guardians pitching before his arm trouble.

Rookies Logan Allen and Tanner Bibee have been standouts in their outings for Cleveland so far this season. Gavin Williams is anticipated to make his debut for the AL Central champions sometime in 2023.
