Espionage, stop officer of the Russian navy and military
On the evening of Tuesday 30 March, the Carabinieri del Ros, under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rome, stopped a Navy officer and an officer of the Russian Armed Forces stationed in our country with allegations of espionage and disclosure of secrecy. The operation, carried out as part of a prolonged information activity conducted by the Internal Security Information Agency, with the support of the Defense Staff, involved a Navy Frigate Captain and an officer accredited to the Embassy of the Russian Federation, both accused of serious crimes relating to espionage and state security. The intervention took place on the occasion of a clandestine meeting between the two, caught red-handed immediately after the transfer of classified documentation by the Italian officer in exchange for a sum of money. The Navy captain was arrested, while the position of the foreigner is still being examined in relation to his diplomatic status.
Russian Ambassador summoned to the Farnesina
In relation to what was reported by the press about the operation conducted yesterday by the ROS carabinieri, under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rome, the Farnesina announces that the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Elisabetta Belloni, has summoned to the Ministry this morning – on the instructions of Minister Luigi Di Maio – the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Italian Republic, Sergey Razov.
