Essaouira: Launch of the citizen participation platform “DIGI ESSAOUIRA”

Initiated by the Association “Les Amis du Verbe”, in partnership with the municipalities of Essaouira, Ounagha and Tamanar, and in coordination with the prefecture of the province, this digital platform aims to strengthen citizen involvement in local affairs, through the stimulation of skills and the enrichment of knowledge, while establishing an effective communication channel between citizens and the competent authorities.

Aiming to boost public debate at the provincial level, this initiative also offers free distance learning sessions, delivered by academics and experts and covering various areas, including participatory democracy, citizen participation, territorial governance and human rights.

In a statement to MAP on this occasion, the president of the Association “Les Amis du Verbe”, Youssef Askour, highlighted the importance of this platform, “the first of its kind at the provincial level”, noting that this initiative aims to strengthen communication between citizens and authorities for better management of local affairs.

“This platform will play a key role in strengthening dialogue between different stakeholders in civil society and local authorities with a view to more inclusive and participatory decision-making,” he explained.

For his part, the representative of the Ministry Delegate in charge of relations with parliament, Sofiane Ouchen, reviewed the achievements made by the ministry in the areas of digitalization and citizen participation, highlighting the efforts made to modernize administrative processes and facilitate citizens’ access to government services through digital tools.

Mr. Ouchen also stressed the importance given by the ministry to promoting citizen participation in decision-making processes, by setting up interactive platforms and online consultations to gather citizens’ opinions on public policies.

Speaking on this occasion, the president of the communal council of Essaouira, Tarik Ottmani, insisted on the importance of digitalization for the development of the province, calling on the local population to actively participate in this platform aimed at “improving administrative transparency, facilitating access to public services and promoting citizen engagement in the decision-making process at the local level”.

For his part, the president of the Tamanar commune, Mounir Aderdour, welcomed this project which “reflects the commune’s vision in terms of citizen participation, aimed at supporting the development dynamics of the province of Essaouira and enabling young people to participate in the management of local affairs.”

For her part, the president of the commune of Ounagha, Amal El Antali, welcomed this initiative which aims to encourage citizen participation and boost the local economic fabric by improving the business climate and the quality of services.

Ms. El Antali also highlighted, in a statement to MAP, the crucial role of young people in political life and the digital transformation of local authorities, expressing the support of the Ounagha municipal council for all initiatives aimed at strengthening the involvement of young people in the decision-making process at the municipal level.

Accessible via the link “www.digiessaouira.org”, this digital platform offering a diverse range of services also allows participants to obtain accredited certifications via the portal.

It also offers a space dedicated to civil society associations, called “Unique database of civil society associations of Essaouira”, and aims to encourage cooperation and partnership between the different actors in the local associative network, while highlighting the crucial role of associations in the local development process.
