Essaouira: opening of the exhibition “Rythmes Gnaouis” by visual artist Saliha El Kanouny

Mounted on the walls of the Burj Bab Marrakech Gallery, this exhibition allows us to see and appreciate a range of artistic works by this painter who explores the spiritual and mystical influence of Gnaoua music, with a particular emphasis on the movements and emblematic moments of this ancestral art.

Through her colorful and expressive canvases, Saliha El Kanouny captures the vibrant and spiritual essence of Gnaoui art, paying homage to its African roots and its important role in Moroccan cultural heritage.

Bringing together some 26 paintings of different sizes and styles, this exhibition invites visitors on a truly unique sensory and emotional journey to the heart of the Cité des Alizés, a city where Gnaoua culture is deeply rooted.

In a statement to MAP on this occasion, Saliha El Kanouny indicated that “Gnaoui Rhythms” is intended as an invitation to explore the patterns and colors evoking Gnaoui ceremonies and songs, thus offering an immersive and captivating experience for visitors.

Known for her ability to fuse traditional elements with a contemporary approach, the visual artist said that this exhibition is the result of several years of research and field work with Gnawa musicians from Essaouira, who enriched her creative process with their stories, rhythms and deep understanding of this iconic culture.

“Rythmes Gnaouis aims to discover and preserve this unique musical heritage through visual art,” she continued.

In addition, Saliha El Kanouny shared with the audience various perspectives on each of her paintings, explaining the inspirations behind the patterns, the color choices and the techniques used.

She also spoke about the emotions and personal experiences that shaped each work, allowing visitors to better understand the intimate connection between her art and Gnawa culture.

“Globalism”, “Drums”, “Jedba” and “Gnaoui” are the titles of some of the works presented in this exhibition which reflects various aspects of the rich Gnaoui tradition, while illustrating the contemporary artistic vision of the painter.

Organized with the support of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication (Department of Culture), this exhibition will continue until August 5.
