This work “pays homage to the artists of the Cité des Alizés, those who live among us and continue to produce, as well as those who have left us leaving pictorial traces of their artistic production”, is emphasized in a presentation note for this film.

“These creators, through the artistic work inspired by the city of Mogador, have carried the natural and human messages of this city to the different regions of the Kingdom of Morocco, as well as in their various exhibitions throughout the world, just as they have participated singularly in its influence and the promotion of the unique heritage, tangible and intangible, by which it is distinguished, and this by remaining vigilant and firm among its true guardians”, it adds.

Thus, the co-authors of the subject of this documentary, namely Abdelhakim Jehouani and Ahmed Harrouz, respectively filmmaker and research artist, “were able to awaken and animate with a dozen artists the artistic discourse of this human testimony, by emphasizing the culture of living together in which they bathed during their various journeys, representing the various trends of artistic expressions in Essaouira and in Morocco, in general”.

In a statement to MAP on this occasion, Mr. Jehouani specified that this is his first documentary and in which he focused on three essential components, namely, the city, visual artists and the theme of living together.

This work is intended, first of all, to be a celebration of the city of Essaouira and its artists as well as universal values, notably those of living together and coexistence, he stressed, while dwelling on the profound meaning of the title of the film “The Guardians of Mogador”.

In a similar statement, Mr. Harrouz indicated that this film represents a rereading of the history of Essaouira, through the production and works of several figures representing the different artistic trends and expressions within this thousand-year-old city.

The messages conveyed, particularly through the relationship of the artists with the city, highlight these universal values which make up the DNA of Essaouira, in particular living together and the spiritual dimension which is eloquently manifested in the works of these creators, he said.

This is a Souiri work that translates the cultural and artistic dynamics of the local and national scene, because this product addresses Essaouira and Morocco in general, with a focus on the deep artistic and cultural discourse, he concluded.

This artistic and cinematographic product, produced with the support of various circles and institutions, including the Essaouira Mogador Association, the municipal council and the province of Essaouira, is a recognition of the efforts of the artists of Mogador and a contribution to the preservation of the cultural and human heritage of the pearl of the Atlantic.
