Essaouira vibrates to the rhythms of Judeo-Moroccan music

Entitled “Choirs en trance”, this musical evening, enhanced by the presence of HM the King’s Advisor and founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, Mr. André Azoulay, as well as other Moroccan and foreign personalities from various backgrounds, was an opportunity to highlight the rich Judeo-Moroccan musical heritage, while celebrating the values ​​of coexistence and tolerance which make up the DNA of the Cité des Alizés.

This colorful show, held in the emblematic space “Dar Souiri”, brought together three exceptional female musical groups, namely the Choeur d’Essaouira Mogador, the Belgian choirs “Les Fatmas de Belgica” and “Bab’Zouz ” as well as the “Haddarates” troupe from Essaouira “Noujoum Souira”.

Bringing together no less than forty women from three monotheistic religions on stage, this concert was a true illustration of living together and intercultural dialogue.

Under the direction of maestro Safouane Moqadem and Belgian-Moroccan singer Laila Amezian, the musicians united their voices and talents to offer an exceptional performance, brilliantly performing classical and contemporary songs drawn from the rich Judeo-Moroccan musical heritage.

Under the ovations of a won over audience, the musical groups offered a range of emblematic songs, such as “Dini Enchouf Lmaghrib” by Pinhass Cohen and “Adio Kerida” by Yasmin Levy, as well as unforgettable works by the song diva Jewish-Moroccan, Zohra El Fassia.

These carefully orchestrated harmonies, coupled with captivating melodies and nostalgic songs, took the audience on a mystical and refined journey, all in an atmosphere of rapprochement and sharing.

In a speech for the occasion, Belgian-Moroccan singer Laila Amezian explained that this initiative was born from her meeting with the Essaouira Mogador Choir a few months ago.

In this sense, she underlined the importance of this musical collaboration to promote cultural diversity and strengthen links between communities.

“This concert is tangible proof that music has the power to transcend barriers and unite us. By singing together, we not only make music, we build bonds of friendship and mutual understanding,” a- she added, before concluding by expressing her hope to see such initiatives multiply in the future.

Initiated by the Essaouira-Mogador Association, this evening was also punctuated by a posthumous tribute to Maurice El Medioni, great pianist and friend of the Cité des Alizés.
