He was a French trail running hopeful. Esteban Olivero died on Saturday at the age of 22 in a mountain accident in the Écrins massif, the French Athletics Federation said on its website on Monday.
The young athlete suffered a fatal fall while returning from the ski touring ascent to the summit of La Blanche, in the Hautes-Alpes, the FFA said.
French champion under 23
Esteban Olivero, originally from Var, had obtained promising results in mountain running in the youth categories. This year he won the French under-23 championship.
He was part of the Excellence group of the French Federation of Alpine and Mountain Clubs (FFCAM) which also announced his death on its Facebook page on Monday.
