Marzio Breda won the 58th edition of the Estense Prize. The award ceremony took place on September 24th at the Claudio Abbado Municipal Theater in Ferrara, after the verdict arrived in the morning, the result of a careful confrontation between the technical and popular jury. The name of the winner was announced through a short video and communicated verbally by Cesara Buonamici, friend of the award, at her nineteenth conduct of the final ceremony. “The award goes to the great quirinalist Breda,” the journalist told the audience who followed the event in the hall and in streaming.

The Estense Prize since 1965 rewards the excellence of Italian journalism; among the winners Carlo Bo who with Cavallari won the inaugural edition then gradually other names (Aldo Cazzullo, Paolo Mieli, Ettore Mo, Fernanda Pivano …).

The technical jury of the award, chaired by Guido Gentili, was made up of Giacomo Bedeschi, Michele Brambilla, Luigi Contu, Tiziana Ferrario, Paolo Garimberti, Jas Gawronski, Giordano Bruno Guerri, Laura Laurenzi, Agnese Pini and Venanzio Postiglione; in spring, on May 27th, the jurors had selected four finalists from 45 candidate titles. The other finalist books were The school will save us by Dacia Maraini (Solferino), The battlefield by Maurizio Molinari (The ship of Theseus) e Claretta the Hitlerian by Mirella Serri (Longanesi); the authors took part in the ceremony.

“The presidents – he observed speaking of the book from the stage Breda – have enlarged the accordion of their powers or have restricted it according to the cases and circumstances”. And he added: «Politics does not allow gaps and when one is created, it is the presidents who fill it. In the book I tried to give a sense of the metamorphosis that the heads of state have made and of how they have become decisive political directors in resolving moments of systemic crisis ”.

Venanzio Postiglione, Deputy Director of Corriere della Sera and sworn in his debut at the Estense Prize, introducing Breda and his work, he observed: «Overwhelmed by information, today more than ever we need credibility and authority. Breda is one you can trust ” President Gentili, interpreting the thought of the technical jury, he observed: “this edition was distinguished by the quality and authoritativeness of the finalists, four points of view useful for understanding and interpreting current events”.

In the award ceremony, the Minister of Education Patrizio Bianchi was also in the room, Giovanna Botteri received the 38th award “Gianni Granzotto – A style in information”. Before delivery Buonamici remembered Piero Angela who had won the 1996 edition of Granzotto. The jury chaired by Gian Luigi Zaina, president of the Premio Estense Foundation, and made up of entrepreneurs from the territories of Bologna, Ferrara and Modena, awarded the prize, a colubrina, to Botteri with the favorable opinion of the technical jury for the important contribution to the analysis of the conflict in Ukraine and the international scenario.
