For the first time, scientists compiled a list of pets living in the United Kingdom cat life expectancy tableswhich can be used to calculate the lifespan of different breeds of cats.

To do this, a team from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in London, together with researchers from Taiwan’s National Chung Hsing University, analyzed 7,396 cats living in the UK that died since 2019. January to 2021 March, veterinary records.

Later, the results were divided by breed and gender – and compiled into life expectancy tables.

The analysis revealed that the overall average lifespan of domestic cats in the UK is 11.7 years.

The researchers also found that female cats are expected to live 1.33 years longer than males.

Burmese cats had the longest average lifespan at 14.4 years, followed by mixed breeds with an average lifespan of 11.9 years and Siamese cats with an average lifespan of 11.7 years.

Meanwhile, Sphynx cats lived the shortest – just 6.8 years.

Factors such as being purebred and being overweight or underweight have also been linked to a shorter lifespan.

British Shorthairs – the most popular breed in the UK – were classified as “mixed” in the study and have a life expectancy of almost 12 years.
