Estonia and Latvia intend to equip themselves with air defense systems

The defense ministers of Estonia and Latvia have signed a memorandum of understanding for the joint procurement of medium-range anti-aircraft defense systems, for the joint defense of the two countries.

Latvian Defense Minister Artis Fabrix said Russia’s aggression in Ukraine indicated the need for defense systems, which would improve cooperation between the Baltic states and provide a response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Estonia and Latvia are both members of NATO. Towards the end of the month, the Defense Post reports, a detailed announcement is expected on the nature of the defense systems that the two countries will acquire.

Estonian Defense Minister Cala Lant said the NATO summit in Madrid had sent a clear message that “assistance will be given to those who are willing to defend themselves”.
