Eswatini has assumed the Chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, signaling a new regional leadership role. The Kingdom of Eswatini is stepping into a central role within Southern Africa as it takes the helm of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation. The European Union (EU) has welcomed Eswatini’s growing role, stating that the Kingdom’s leadership strengthens collective efforts to build a more peaceful and secure Africa. Ministerial Consensus on Regional Stability
The focus within the bloc was underscored by the recent 28th Meeting of the SADC Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation. During the session, Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. George Chaponda, called on SADC member states to deepen cooperation and strengthen collective action to safeguard peace, security and stability across the region. Dr. Chaponda emphasized that regional unity remains the foundation for addressing the complex political and security challenges confronting Southern Africa.
Ministers engaged in extensive deliberations on a range of issues affecting the region, including political developments, peace and security concerns, and efforts to strengthen democratic governance among member states. According to Dr. Chaponda, the meeting reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to working together to prevent conflict, promote political stability and reinforce the institutions that underpin peace and democracy across SADC. The ministers reached consensus on a number of measures aimed at enhancing regional cooperation in addressing emerging security threats while advancing the shared objective of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Southern Africa.
Economic and Social Stakes for the Region
For ordinary emaSwati and citizens across Southern Africa, these diplomatic milestones carry real meaning. Peace and stability encourage investment, create jobs, boost trade, improve public services and give young people greater opportunities to build successful futures without the fear of conflict or instability. International Support and Strategic Alignment
The European Union further supports African-led peace initiatives through the European Peace Facility, which provides assistance to regional organisations and partner countries to strengthen conflict prevention, crisis response and peacebuilding efforts. During a recent visit to Ethiopia, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, emphasised that stronger EU-Africa relations are in the shared interest of both continents. While in Djibouti, following the signing of a Status of Forces Agreement, she also highlighted the EU’s continued support in safeguarding strategic maritime routes in the Red Sea, demonstrating Europe’s commitment to regional and global security.
