In a recent interview with Variety, Ethan Hawke opened up about his infamous flirting attempt with Rihanna at the 2015 NBA All-Star Game. Hawke, alongside his daughter Maya Hawke, humorously recalled the moment, shedding light on their family dynamics.

Hawke admitted, “I’ve been caught by the paparazzi openly flirting with Rihanna,” prompting Maya to interject, “Trying to.” Accepting the correction, Hawke continued, “Trying to flirt. So that’s been to the family shame, so you’re really touching a nerve.” To this, Maya replied, “No, it’s family pride.”

At the time, Hawke took to Instagram to apologize to his son Levon for swapping seats with him so he could speak with Rihanna. He humorously wrote, “After Rihanna’s brilliant halftime performance, I’m hoping my son can find it in his heart to forgive a Dad for taking his moment.”

During the interview, Variety also asked Hawke a fun question about his preference between attending a Rihanna concert or a Lady Gaga concert. Maya quickly responded that her father would choose Rihanna while Hawke cheekily said, “both.” Explaining his previous concert experiences, Hawke mentioned attending a Lady Gaga concert with Maya, correcting himself by stating that they were actually sitting next to Lady Gaga during a Madonna concert.

Maya added, “We did have an amazing year where we went to Madonna, Taylor [Swift] and Adele, and it was a highly educational, very motivational year for me. It was some very good fathering. Well, we gotta go see Rihanna next.”

The interview also touched on their current projects. Hawke directed the film “Wildcat,” in which Maya stars as writer Flannery O’Connor. Additionally, Hawke is set to star in “Leave the World Behind,” an adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s bestselling novel, scheduled for release in December.

As the father-daughter duo promotes their respective works, they continue to share lighthearted moments, including their playful recollections of the memorable encounter with Rihanna.
