The Oppenheimer star abandoned vegetarianism for veganism. But she reveals: I miss cheese terribly

Cillian Murphy, Oscar winner for best leading actor in Oppenheimer and the new face of the Versace Icons campaign which will be unveiled on Wednesday 3 April, has revealed that he has become vegan after over a decade of vegetarianism. Murphy, 47, shared the news of his decision on an episode of the WTF podcast with Marc Maron. Veganism outlaws the consumption of any food or drink containing meat, dairy and eggs, as part of a practice that sees individuals abstain from the use of any animal products. When asked by Maron if he missed eating meat, Murphy replied: No, I don’t miss meat. I haven’t eaten meat in a long time. Then he added: I had a kind of “relapse” and I didn’t feel better, so I gave up again.

When asked what food he missed most after switching from vegetarian to vegan, Cillian noted: I miss cheese terribly, noting that he switched to a vegan diet for both ethical and health reasons. The actor made it known that he had given up meat since the days of mad cow disease: I was a vegetarian for about 15 years. But it wasn’t a moral decision, more than anything I was afraid of contracting mad cow disease (a disease known medically as bovine spongiform encephalopathy). His period of vegetarianism was interrupted when he began filming Peaky Blinders. Murphy began incorporating meat into his diet on the advice of his trainer at the time, in an effort to gain weight and look less like a skinny Irish boy.

While his trainer’s belief that Murphy needed to eat meat to build his physique for the role of Tommy Shelby is still commonly held, it is a very common misconception about vegan diet and health. A well-planned plant-based diet provides all the protein needs of a normal person or bodybuilder. There are many bodybuilders and professional athletes who thrive on a plant-based diet. The change in the star’s diet comes just as it has been confirmed that she will return to Peaky Blinders for a film based on the series, reprising her iconic role as Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby.
