Samuel Eto’o in court (Reuters)
Samuel Eto’o, one of the players best remembered by Barcelona fans, was sentenced today (Monday) to 22 months probation. The Cameroonian admitted in court that he and his agent Jose Maria Masales defrauded 3,872,621 euros of public money between 2006 and 2009.
Eto admitted his guilt, but at the same time dropped his rifle on Masales, whom he used to define as “second father.” As you may recall, an investigation is underway between the two, as the former player claims that his former agent committed crimes in the management of his assets. “I know the facts and I’m going to pay the price, but for the record, I was then a kid who always did what his father asked,” he said. The indictment imposed a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence on the former player and his agent, but was eventually reduced to 22 months for the Cameroonian who committed four offenses and only one year for his agent who was only an accomplice to the crime.
Also, the former African star also received four fines, one for every offense he committed, with the four of them together reaching a height of 1,810,310 euros. Masales, on the other hand, will have to pocket 905,155 euros.
During his tenure in Catalonia, Eto’o earned huge sums from both Barcelona and the Puma company he represented at the time, and together with Malls he managed to evade tax payments in one way or another. Since the two have no criminal record and have pleaded guilty and returned some of what they stole, the court decided not to immediately impose the sentences but to impose them on probation.
