The granules on artificial turf pitches are an environmental problem and may no longer be used from 2031. The conversion will be expensive.

Frankfurt/Main.

The environmentally friendly conversion of around 5,200 German artificial turf sports fields will be expensive. “It can be assumed that additional costs amount to at least one billion euros,” said Bernd Düsterdiek, from the German Association of Cities and Municipalities (DStGB), to the German Press Agency.

Düsterdiek is calling for financial aid from the federal and state governments for municipalities and clubs after the EU ban on granules on artificial turf pitches from 2031: “In view of the upcoming conversions and replacement of playing surfaces, this is necessary.”

A longer transition period would be desirable

Since the average useful life of artificial turf pitches is 12 to 15 years, a longer and more practical transition period until at least 2035 would have been desirable, said the deputy for urban development and the environment at the DStGB. It is “absolutely necessary” that the range of public sports facilities is maintained without restrictions in order to provide a comprehensive range of sports and thus contribute to a healthy society.

“In Germany there is currently a major loss of substance in the public infrastructure, which also extends to the area of sports facilities. Sport can only live up to its socio-political importance, which also includes questions of integration, child and youth work and educational policy , if sufficient sports facilities are available.”

Ban on microplastics

The EU Commission had decided to gradually ban the sale of microplastics in a wide range of areas. The term microplastic refers to synthetic polymers that are difficult to degrade and are less than five millimeters in size. The particles accumulate in animals, including fish and shellfish, and can therefore also end up in food.

“Cities and municipalities are very aware of the challenge of environmental pollution caused by microplastics. It is therefore right to initiate measures to further prevent plastic waste and microplastics. However, the measures taken must also be proportionate and cities and municipalities, too “Do not impose undue burden on clubs,” said Düsterdieck. Most new artificial turf pitches are already being built with alternative infill materials. (dpa)
