BRUSSELS (Reuters) – European Union industry chief Thierry Breton gave TikTok on Thursday 24 hours for the company to detail measures it had taken to combat the spread of misinformation on its app, following the militant group Hamas’ attack on Israel.

Breton’s warning in a letter to TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew follows similar warnings to Platform X owner Elon Musk and Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg this week.

X Chief Executive Linda Yaccarino said on Thursday that the platform has removed hundreds of Hamas-affiliated accounts and taken steps to remove or label tens of thousands of content since the attack in Israel.

Breton said in the letter to TikTok that he had indications that the app was being used to spread illegal content and disinformation in the EU following the Hamas attacks.
