EU confirms support for formation of unified government in Libya

by times news cr

The European Union Mission and the embassies of the EU Member States in Libya expressed their deep concern about what they described as the deterioration of the situation in Libya in light of the increasing political division in the absence of unified institutions.

A joint statement issued on Friday urged all Libyan parties to engage constructively and in good faith and seek a negotiated solution.

The statement affirmed the European Union’s readiness to effectively support this process, including restoring Libya’s path towards forming a unified government and holding national elections.

The European Mission and the embassies called on all Libyan leaders to put national interests first, reduce tensions, refrain from using or threatening to use force, and lift the force majeure on all oil fields.

The statement added that the intimidation of members of the Supreme Council of State and employees of the Central Bank of Libya, the closure of oil fields, and the disruption of banking services exacerbate the already fragile situation, threatening the economic lifelines of the Libyan people, according to the statement.

The statement pointed out that the continuation of unilateral measures and the personal management of state institutions and resources threatens Libya’s financial and economic stability, which threatens to escalate the protracted crisis in the country.

The European Mission and the embassies also announced their support for the call of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya to take urgent steps to calm the situation, and we welcome the initiative to hold an emergency meeting of all concerned parties to resolve the Central Bank crisis peacefully.
