EU disappointed with talks with Iran on nuclear program | News from Germany about Europe | Dw

European diplomats have accused Iran of a destructive stance at the renewed talks in Vienna on its atomic program. “Iran has abandoned almost all difficult compromises that have been reached in months of tense negotiations,” sources in the German, French and British delegations said Friday, December 3.

EU diplomats have warned that time is running out for a diplomatic settlement of the conflict. After five days of talks in Vienna, they will return to the Austrian capital next week to continue discussions on how to get Iran back into compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and get the US to lift sanctions against Tehran.

Negotiations on a return to the 2015 nuclear deal were suspended for five months in June, but by then some elements for a possible compromise had already been agreed. The new head of the Iranian delegation, Ali Bagheri, this week presented, he said, two new proposals on sanctions and aspects of the nuclear deal, which were studied in Western capitals, Beijing and Moscow.

Dissatisfaction with Iran’s position

On December 3, European diplomats stated that the position taken by Iran does not give a real chance of reaching a compromise. “After careful and careful study, we are disappointed and worried about the proposed amendments by Iran to the text, which was agreed on the results of the last six rounds of negotiations in Vienna,” they said.

In 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA and imposed tough economic sanctions against Iran. In response, Tehran also began to gradually abandon the treaty restrictions and eventually began to produce almost weapons-grade uranium.
