EU expresses concern over deepening division in Libya

The European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, expressed during his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of National Unity, Taher Al-Baour, “his concern about the danger of deepening division in Libya and its threat to its unity and stability.”

Orlando said in a tweet on the “X” platform: “He conveyed to Al-Baour the concern of the European Union and its member states regarding what he described as “unilateral measures, stressing that they could deepen the division in Libya and threaten its unity and stability.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, “The meeting discussed the latest political developments and support for international efforts to enhance stability in the country in various fields.”

In a related context, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs of the Government of National Unity, Muhammad Khalil Issa, met with the Chargé d’Affairs of the Embassy of the State of Palestine to the State of Libya, Muhammad Abdul Latif Rahhal.

According to the ministry, “This meeting comes in the context of affirming the Government of National Unity’s firm and supportive position towards the brotherly Palestinian people, and affirming Libya’s commitment to supporting their legitimate rights.”

Issa pointed out, “The pivotal role it plays in international and regional forums to enhance support for the Palestinian cause, especially the genocidal war they are being subjected to in Gaza by the Zionist occupation; for nearly a year, and that the State of Libya, represented by the Presidential Council and the Government of National Unity, is sparing no effort in seeking within the Arab, international and legal frameworks to stop this war and hold its perpetrators accountable, including its joining the lawsuit filed by the Republic of South Africa before the International Court of Justice.”

For his part, Mohammed Abdel Latif Rahal praised “Libya’s firm position, government and people, in supporting Palestine,” expressing his “appreciation for the political, in-kind and relief efforts provided by the State of Libya, especially the support directed to the Gaza Strip, highly appreciating the role played by the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in international forums in support of the Palestinian cause, in addition to the Libyan popular efforts through relief institutions that work to provide humanitarian support and send relief convoys to the Palestinian people.”
