Italian Member of the European Parliament (EP) Paolo Inselvini stated in his letter to the European Commission (EC) that the growing popularity of the drug fentanyl in the European Union (EU) could lead to a new “black plague” in the region, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.

According to him, the popularity of drugs and opioids in the European Union is growing. In 2021 alone, 87.4 million European citizens used illegal substances, of which a million people purchased opioids without a medical prescription.

He noted that the spread of illegal substances such as fentanyl is currently growing and is becoming an uncontrollable scourge in the United States. Ultimately, this trend could lead to the destruction of millions of lives in Europe, the politician is sure.

“Given that fentanyl, also known as the ‘zombie drug’, is sold cheaply and is becoming increasingly available on our continent, it could become the new ‘black plague’ in Europe,” he concluded.

In his letter, the MP called on the European Commission to influence the dangerous trend. He also asked how the EC intends to limit the spread of this dangerous drug in Europe and whether it is seeking to limit its use for medical purposes at all in order to avoid addiction among millions of citizens.
