(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, 17 SEPTEMBER – “The fact that a candidate from a far-right government is appointed vice-president of the EU Commission remains a major concern for the Green group”. This was stated by the co-president of the EU Greens, Terry Reintke, on the nomination of Raffaele Fitto who could “create a dangerous shift towards the far right in the Commission and jeopardize the pro-democratic majority”. The group – she added – “will not give Fitto an easy ride” during the hearings in front of the European Parliament. “The role of executive vice-president to an ECR representative does not correspond to our requests and creates problems for us” but “we will work responsibly” in view of the hearings. This was stated by the leader of the EU Socialists Iratxe Garcia Perez. “I would like to know Fitto’s commitment to European values. There is a political problem in assigning an executive vice-presidency” to an ECR candidate but “it is necessary to clarify. We will work responsibly, thinking about what is best for the EU. We want to assess whether all candidates have a firm commitment to European values”, he added. (ANSA).
