EU has “evidence” of Iranian drone use

by time news

The European Union is stepping up the pace against Iran because the country is said to have supplied drones to Russia. The spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in Brussels today that the EU now has “reasonable evidence” that drones used by Russia against Ukraine originated in Iran.

According to information from the German news magazine “Spiegel”, twelve EU countries have agreed on a new package of sanctions in a hurry. There will be consultations with the EU ambassadors in the afternoon.

According to information from the “Spiegel”, a total of eight Iranian people and institutions responsible for the construction or delivery of kamikaze drones are to be sanctioned. The measures are likely to be entry bans for the Schengen area and financial sanctions.

EU imposed sanctions on religious police

Only on Monday did the EU impose sanctions on the Iranian religious police and other responsible parties. The reason was the authorities’ crackdown on demonstrators after the death of a 22-year-old woman. She is said to have worn the headscarf improperly.

According to Ukrainian sources, the Russian army is also using Iranian drones in its attacks in the neighboring country. Kamikaze drones in particular have recently been increasingly used in Russian attacks on cities and on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine.

Kuleba announced yesterday that he had therefore proposed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sever diplomatic relations with Tehran.
