MADRID, 23 (EUROPA PRESS)

The leaders of the European Union have expressed this Thursday, on the eve of the war in Ukraine celebrating its first anniversary, their unconditional support for the Eastern European nation and have assured that “they will not rest” until peace is restored in the country.

The European heads of State and Government have shown in a statement their firm support for the so-called ‘Peace Formula’ that the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has raised in recent weeks.

“Together with our international partners, we will ensure that Ukraine prevails, that international law is respected, that peace and territorial integrity of Ukraine is restored within its recognized international borders, that Ukraine is rebuilt and that justice is served,” they have asserted

On the occasion of the imminent first anniversary of the conflict, the European Council has shown its appreciation to the Ukrainian people, who in these twelve months have shown “incredible strength” to defend their country and the “fundamental principles of International Law” despite the difficulties and “Russia’s crimes.”

“No country has the right to invade its neighbor or violate its sovereignty and territorial integrity. This aggression is a crime against peace. It violates the Charter of the United Nations, the principles of the UN and the values of Humanity”, have remarked the European leaders, who have insisted on not remaining “passive” in the face of these “crimes”.

Thus, they have accused Russia of turning “food and energy into weapons”, as well as having launched “deeply irresponsible nuclear threats”, while spreading “false narratives about war”. With all this, they consider that the consequences of the conflict are not only experienced in Ukraine, but also at a global food and economic level.

“The European Union will continue to work with partners to mitigate these effects and provide assistance to the countries and people most in need,” reads the aforementioned statement, where the EU leaders have also taken the opportunity to highlight the “speed and unity” with which the bloc has responded to the Russian invasion.

“We will remain firm and in full solidarity with Ukraine and its people for as long as necessary (…) Ukrainians have expressed their desire for a future within the European Union and we have recognized this by granting it the status of a candidate country,” they have remarked from Brussels, extolling the democratic character of Ukraine.

Finally, the heads of State and Government of the European Union have conveyed their support to Kiev in “political, economic, humanitarian, financial and military” terms, as well as with a view to the future reconstruction of the country, which they have advocated for financing with seized Russian assets.

“We will continue to increase the collective pressure on Russia to end its war of aggression. To this end, we will adopt a tenth package of sanctions and take action against those who try to circumvent the measures of the European Union,” they have settled.

INSTITUTIONS ILLUMINATED WITH UKRAINIAN COLORS

On the other hand, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has reported on her official Twitter profile that the buildings of the European institutions will be illuminated tonight with the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

“We honor the courage of the Ukrainian people. The memory of the fallen. The strength of an entire country in resistance. Let this illumination be a reminder that together we can overcome even the darkest times,” Von der Leyen said.

The headquarters of the European institutions have been used throughout this year to launch various messages of support for Kiev, and their night lighting has even been turned off in solidarity with the power cuts registered in Ukraine as a result of Russian attacks.
