EU, move against Orban for the anti Lgbtq law. 7.2 billion of funds suspended

The war between the EU and Orban’s Hungary continues with no holds barred. The Commission has decided to suspend the Recovery Fund, freezing the 7.2 billion euros envisaged by the agreement. The move is due to the fact that the Hungarian premier has decided to keep going and the anti-LGBTQ law will come into force from today. The unofficial reasons – reads the Republic – provided by Brussels to justify the “freezing” of the Hungarian Plan hinge on insufficient guarantees regarding the correct use of funding. It is quite evident to me that there is an invisible and undeclared thread with the political tussle that has opened in recent months.

The fact remains – continues Repubblica – that the timing with which the Hungarian Recovery is being evaluated creates a link with the ongoing dispute with Orbán. The Commission in recent days has opened the way to the infringement procedure against Budapest for the new anti-gay legislation that Von der Leyen has defined a “shame”. Two weeks ago, then, the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, sent a letter to the Commission asking to suspend the funds in favor of Hungary (including the NextGenerationEu) in application of the new EU regulation which introduces compliance with the Rule of law.
