EU plan to cut Russian gas and oil to be presented in May

by time news

The European Commission (EC) will prepare a plan for the EU to phase out Russian gas, oil and coal by mid-May. According to the plan, it is supposed to abandon raw materials from Russia by 2027. This was told by the head of the EC Ursula von der Leyen. There is no word yet on a direct ban on energy supplies from Russia.

“By the end of May, we will propose a phase-out of dependence on Russian gas, oil and coal by 2027. This will be backed up by the necessary national and European resources,” said Ms Leyen in her Twitter. According to her, the commission will also present a plan to optimize the structure of the electricity market in the context of the green transition of the European economy.

Recall that plans to phase out Russian gas are part of the EU climate change policy, according to which the countries of the union must reduce gas consumption by 30% by 2030.

Russia supplies 40% of the gas, more than 25% of the oil and almost 50% of the coal that the union consumes. According to the European Commission, this year it is possible to reduce the consumption of Russian gas by two-thirds, and it will be possible to completely abandon it long before 2030.
