The group received the approval of the European Commission, for the support measures of France and the Netherlands which were worth 10.4 billion euros, based on state aid rules. Air France-KLM.

The Commission first approved the two measures on 4 May 2020 and 13 July 2020 under the temporary state aid framework for the coronavirus, but the General Court subsequently annulled those Commission decisions on 20 December 2023 and 7 February 2024 .

Air France-KLM Group means Air France-KLM Holding, including its subsidiaries, in particular KLM and its subsidiaries, as well as Air France and its subsidiaries.

The Executive Vice President, responsible for Competition Policy, Margrethe Vesteyjer said in this regard:

“The Air France-KLM group is a large network airline that plays a central role in both the Dutch and French economies. Due to the imposition of travel restrictions to stop the spread of the coronavirus, the Air France-KLM group suffered a significant reduction in its services and high operating losses as a result. Following the rulings of the General Court annulling the original decisions, the Commission determined that the €10.4 billion liquidity support for the Air France-KLM group was in line with state aid rules. The Air France-KLM group needed a state guarantee and a state loan to obtain vital liquidity to face the difficult period of the coronavirus and these were granted under the temporary framework, regardless of the definition of the beneficiary.”
