EU summit: Europe holds Ukraine’s baton

The Union wants to support Ukraine “as long as necessary” against Russia. When it comes to EU accession, however, it remains vague.

Brussels. More heavy weapons to defend against the Russian invaders and the start of EU accession negotiations this year: On Thursday, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, will address two wishes to the heads of state and government of the EU, who will express their commitment to support put Ukraine to the test.

With a probability bordering on certainty, Zelensky will personally attend a European Council for the first time since the Russian invasion of his country a year ago. After his visit to London on Wednesday (see report on page 6), he met French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Paris in the evening. These are the first trips abroad within Europe since the Russian invasion on February 24 last year. Selensky was in Washington just before Christmas.
