The money should flow into new infrastructure projects and better energy efficiency of public buildings.

The EU and its member states want to fund new infrastructure projects and improved energy efficiency in public buildings in South Africa with around 280 million euros. The partnership will support the country in a just and green upswing, the EU Commission announced on Friday. Almost 88 of the 280 million should come from the EU budget, the rest will be lifted by EU countries. The money is paid in the form of grants.

“In addition, Germany, France and the EU will provide more than three billion US dollars (around 2.75 billion euros) for South Africa as part of the partnership for a just energy transition,” it said. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stressed: “Combating climate change is a global responsibility.” The EU is working with partners around the world to address this threat.

The project is part of the EU initiative “Global Gateway”. This is intended to invest up to 300 billion euros in the infrastructure of emerging and developing countries. The project competes with the “New Silk Road” that China has been working on in many countries for years.
