High-ranking European and American diplomats held urgent talks in the Middle East to avoid a full-scale war in the region after the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran. This was reported on Wednesday by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources, Day.Az reports citing TASS.

According to her, the EU’s deputy foreign policy chief Enrique Mora was holding “vital” talks in Tehran, while the White House National Security Council coordinator responsible for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, was in Saudi Arabia.

The discussions were focused on persuading Iran either not to respond to the attack, which it blames on Israel, or to limit itself to symbolic action, unnamed officials told the newspaper. “Since last night, everyone has been putting pressure on Tehran not to respond and to restrain itself,” a Western diplomat involved in the negotiations told the newspaper.
