Human beings have not yet been able to understand the 95% of the universeand this is because that percentage is what represents the dark matter: that which is composed of particles that do not absorb, reflect, or emit light and which, therefore, is practically invisible. Its abundant presence, however, causes subtle changes in the appearance and movements of the things we can see.

In this constant and very human attempt to satisfy curiosity, projects have already emerged in the various space agencies to seek answers to this cosmological construction. Euclidoperated by ESA in collaboration with NASA, is one of them.

Thanks to its cutting-edge technology provided by 300 institutes from 13 European countriesthe ship managed to enter orbit last July 2023 and now offers us the first spectacular images that reveal new details about our universe. “They are even more beautiful and sharper than we could have expected, and show us many features never before seen in known areas of the nearby Universe,” explains René Laureijs, ESA’s Euclid project scientist, in the official announcement.

The Euclid mission is still in the testing and calibration phase, but plans to begin some routine observations from 2024. It is expected that, within six years, the spacecraft will be able to send information once a year from a third of the sky with a precision and sensitivity unprecedented, which will allow experts to continue exploring and studying dark matter, “one of the greatest mysteries of modern physics,” says Carole Mundell, scientific director of ESA.
