Eunice storm; Heavy damage in Europe, 8 deaths

Hurricane Eunice wreaks havoc in Europe The wind was blowing at a record speed of 196km (122 mph). Eight people were killed in the storm. Flights, trains and ferries were disrupted in Western Europe. Millions of people were displaced.

A 30-year-old woman has died after falling from a tree in London. Strong winds and rain are still prevailing here. Meanwhile, Mercyside police said a 50-year-old man had died in northwest England.

Across Britain, a tree fell in the Netherlands, killing three people and a 60-year-old man in southeastern Ireland. A 79-year-old Canadian man has been killed in Belgium. A motorist has died after his car crashed into a fallen tree across the road near Adorp in the northern province of Groningen.

As in London, high weather warnings were issued in southern England, South Wales and the Netherlands, many schools were closed, train services were halted, and high waves pounded seawalls along the coast. Utility companies, meanwhile, said the wind had cut off more than 140,000 homes in England and 80,000 properties in Ireland.

Around the UK capital, three people were hospitalized after being injured in a storm. A large part of the roof of the Millennium Dome in the capital was blown away by the wind.
