In recent decades, openness on diversity issues has been notable in several regions of the world, especially in Europa y North AmericaThese regions have passed various anti-discrimination laws, which serve as a model for other nations. This greater openness has allowed several political leaders to openly be members of the community. LGBT+ be elected in their respective countries.
One of the most notable cases occurred in 2023, when Edgars Rinkevičs, who had served as minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia For a long period, he became the first openly gay head of state in the European Union (EU). In his inaugural address to the Saeima, the Latvian parliament, Rinkēvičs pledged to influence legislation and shape public opinion, with the aim of making Latvia “a more inclusive and equal country.” In addition, his policy of strong support for North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)) and the armed forces have been notable during his administration.
The trend towards inclusion is not limited to the Baltic country. Although this has generated controversy, it has not been an obstacle to their political careers; in fact, many have been recognized for their outstanding work in public service.
At the subnational level, leaders such as Elio Di Rupo in Belgium; Tina Kotek, Maura Healey, Jared Polis and Evan Low in the United States; Andrew Barr in Australia; Arno Brok in the Netherlands; Eduardo Leite and Fátima Bezerra in Brazil; Gustavo Melella in Argentina; Claudia López Hernández in Colombia; and Carlos Bruce in Peru, represent the growing inclusion in global politics.
