Europe doubles Russian grain imports

The European Union doubled its imports of Russian grain in June, to nearly €12 million, before the tariff increase.

An analysis by the Novosti agency of Eurostat data showed that the European Union imported grain worth 11.8 million euros from Russia at the beginning of the summer, compared to 6.5 million in the previous month.

According to the data, “imports of wheat increased mainly by about 2.4 times, reaching 9 million euros, and also buckwheat by about 2.6 times, reaching 720 thousand euros.”

According to the Novosti Agency, “Italy was the main importer in June, as its purchases increased fivefold to 7.2 million euros.”

It is noteworthy that “Russia leads the world in wheat exports, and according to data from the Russian Grain Exporters Union, Russian wheat exports amounted to 29.5 million tons from the beginning of the 2023/2024 agricultural season until the end of last January, an increase of 13% compared to last season.”

As of July 1, “the European Union has imposed higher duties on imports of grain, oilseeds and their processed products from Russia and Belarus,” Russian Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut confirmed, “Russia will open new markets for its grain after the European Union increased customs duties on Russian grain.”
