The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, argued today, in the form of a warning, that Europe is on the threshold of a war which it is not yet ready to face.

“I don’t want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept that belongs to the past,” Tusk said in an interview with European media.

According to the Polish leader, “literally any scenario is possible” now, while it is the first time Europe has faced such a situation since 1945.

Against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022, Western allies and top military officials are increasingly concerned about a possible spillover of violence, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin repeatedly denying any intention to attack the NATO.

However, Tusk argues that Europe is not yet ready to face the threat, while last week, a Russian missile entered Polish airspace.

“Europe still has a long way to go,” the Polish prime minister said, stressing that the first step is for NATO countries to all meet the target of spending 2% of their GDP on defence.

“The next two years will judge everything. If we cannot support Ukraine with enough weapons and ammunition, if Ukraine loses, no one in Europe will be able to feel safe,” said the Polish prime minister.

“Whether Joe Biden wins the next US election or Donald Trump, Europe will have to do more on defense,” Tusk added.
