For the first time in its 500-year history, Europe is in its worst drought. The report was released by a senior researcher at the European Commission Joint Research Centre. Europe witnessing worst dry spell in recent times reports says that this year’s drought will have worse consequences than what happened in 2018.
West Central Europe and Britain are expected to experience drier weather over the next three months than last year. The drying up of major water bodies such as the Rhine and the Loire is seriously affecting Europe. Sea freight across the Scandinavian region also came to a standstill.
Norway, which relies on hydropower for 90 percent of its electricity transport, is the most severely affected. Total figures from the European Commission’s European Drought Observatory show that 17 percent of the European landscape is at risk.
47 percent of the area is facing severe drought.
