Consumers will soon be able to pay via a QR Code for all types of products and services.

After contactless payment, instant transfers, the French will be able to add a new string to their bow to pay for their purchases. In a few months, they will be able to pay for any type of service or product by scanning a simple QR Code with their phone. The European Payment Initiative (EPI), a European banking consortium comprising the main French banks (Crédit Mutuel, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, La Banque Postale, Société Générale), the Dutch ING, the German Deutsche Bank, and fintech French company Worldline, has announced the launch of an electronic wallet by the end of the year.

The goal? Offer a European alternative to the American Visa and Mastercard or to the tech giants. This service will initially be launched in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. These five countries alone account for 60% of electronic payments in Europe, according to the EPI.
