DECRYPTION – Critics focus on the restoration of nature, an emblematic law which could be rejected today in Strasbourg.

Vigil of arms Tuesday at the Parliament of Strasbourg. In the political groups, we were watching for the statements of the few right-wing elected officials likely to tip the vote on the nature restoration law. A text emblematic of the European green transition, challenged by three committees of the Strasbourg Parliament, including that of the environment, has been the subject of a pitched battle for weeks. As hostile farmers demonstrated in front of buildings and supporters – including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg – urged elected officials to move forward, the votes were counted and recounted.

The vote, described as historic, is scheduled for Wednesday at midday. Everyone agrees that it will be very tight. If the rejection motion presented by the environment committee does not obtain a majority, then elected officials will be called upon to vote on some 150 amendments. Before proceeding to the final vote on a text that is likely to be very watered down…
