The acting Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchezexpressed this Tuesday the Government’s optimism that the European Commission agrees to withdraw the introduction of highway tolls in 2024 and has reiterated that “The Government’s will is not to apply any payment system for the use of highways”.
“We have already said that the Government’s will is not to apply any pay-per-use system on highways,” he stressed in statements to the media in the European Parliament in Brussels, where this Tuesday he appears before the parliamentary Transport committee to present the priorities of his portfolio within the framework of the Spanish presidency of the Council.
Brussels confirmed in July that the measure appeared in the Spanish recovery plan that was approved by both Brussels and the Member States and it appeared linked, specifically, to the disbursement of the fifth tranche, which amounts to more than 8,000 million euros.
However, Sánchez pointed out that “the conditions that existed at the time the measure was presented are not the same as today” and although he has not confirmed whether the Community Executive has accepted the withdrawal of this milestone in the review of the plan presented by Spain and still pending the evaluation of Brussels, has indicated that they are “optimistic.”

In this sense, he explained that the Government has presented to the European Commission a series of “alternative proposals” What do they seek “reinforce” other measures that have already been applied and among which he has highlighted efforts to encourage rail transport or public transport.
“We know that the Commission is analyzing it and that we can share that criterion, that analysis and that shared vision that allows us to be optimistic“, he added.
