WORLD – This Wednesday, November 8, members of the Parliament and the European Council met to define the framework for European digital identity. A new European digital wallet will soon make it possible to authenticate to access public and private services, and to share and sign documents.

Initially proposed in June 2021, the text will now need to be approved before becoming law. The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy will hold a vote on November 28.

A European digital identity to access public and private services

Members of the Parliament and the European Council have agreed to define the contours of the next European digital identity. According to the negotiated text, this new digital wallet will soon make it possible to authenticate to access public and private services, and to share and electronically sign documents.

MPs defended nature open source of the system to encourage transparency. They added strict rules to the text to, according to them, monitor the companies that will be involved in the authentication of citizens. A “privacy dashboard” will give users control over their data. Parliamentarians promise use on a strictly voluntary basis. All these proposals are, however, submitted to the vote on November 28 to be introduced into the text.
