European Gas Prices Hit Highest Levels Since 2022 as Storage Drops

Europe is entering the winter heating season with natural gas storage at just 72 percent capacity, down from the usual 90 percent, driven by Middle Eastern supply disruptions and shipping blockades in the Strait of Hormuz that have pushed benchmark trading prices to their highest levels since 2022.

Natural Gas Prices Surge in Amsterdam

Wholesale natural gas trading hit €97 per megawatt-hour on Monday at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility, marking the highest price point recorded on the continent since 2022. The 7 percent weekly gain follows an acceleration in withdrawal rates as falling temperatures drive up residential heating demand across Europe.

Contracts based on Dutch TTF traded near 95.41 EUR/MWh early in the week, reflecting one of the most volatile rallies in commodity markets. Market analytics from XTB show year-to-date gains climbing by 231.28 percent, while month-on-month figures rose by 35.51 percent.

Storage Deficits Compound as Middle East LNG Flows Dry Up

Behind the price surge lies an inventory shortfall. European gas storage facilities stood at 73.75 percent capacity as the winter season began, a marked decline from the seasonal norm of 90 percent. Oilprice noted that data from Gas Infrastructure Europe placed storage sites at 74.62 percent full by October 25, representing the lowest seasonal inventory level since GIE record-keeping began in 2009.

The shortfall stems directly from a collapse in liquefied natural gas shipments originating in the Persian Gulf. LNG cargoes from Qatar have slowed to a trickle over the past seven months due to shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Israel war on Iran. Nearly a tenth of Europe’s imported LNG previously transited the strait.

Fatih Birol Warns Europe Faces Severe Winter Vulnerability

Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, issued a stark warning from an international conference in Berlin, stating that Europe is entering winter with historically low gas reserves and cannot withstand further supply shocks.

Normally before the winter, European countries have a lot of gas stocks, but the gas stocks we have while we are entering this winter are much lower than historical averages.

Birol noted that European buyers are forced to compete directly for spot cargoes against Asian purchasers, who depend even more heavily on Middle Eastern supply lines. The Asian LNG benchmark JKM traded above $30 per million British thermal units for December and January contracts.

UK Energy Costs Face Upward Pressure Amid High Import Dependence

Britain faces particularly acute exposure due to its minimal domestic gas storage capacity. Following decades of relying on homegrown production from the North Sea, the United Kingdom maintains some of the smallest gas stores in Europe.

Regulators project that British households will experience significant bill increases, with typical annual dual-fuel bills expected to climb 16 percent in January to approximately £2,000. Over the year ending in August, the UK paid a record £4bn on power imports, of which half was spent on electricity imported from France.
