Car manufacturers in Europe, and in the US as well, underestimate the difficulty of developing software for electric cars. Computer bugs in the software of the new low-cost electric car for Europe, the Citroen e-C3, are causing delivery delays of several months.
Stellantis is far from alone in these problems. Volkswagen was long unable to develop satisfactory software through its Cariad subsidiary, while Porsche had to delay its electric Macan by two years.
Volvo ran into major issues with the new EX30, and the manufacturer decided to block several key features of its new EX90 while waiting for the bugs to be resolved. And at General Motors, the electric Chevrolet Blazer was suspended after the infotainment screens were completely turned off.
The problem is deeper, according to European analysts. In fact, manufacturers everywhere are trying to cut costs to keep up with aggressive Chinese manufacturers. This also includes reducing the number of engineers in the development centers. Stellantis plans to cut 1,200 such jobs in the US, Europe and China.
