European Parliament recognises González Urrutia as legitimate and democratic president of Venezuela

The European Parliament recognized Edmundo González Urrutia as the president legitimately and democratically chosen from Venezuela, reflected a non-binding text.

The decision, which was supported by 309 votes in favor201 against and 12 abstentions, as well as the support of the European People’s Party, ultra-conservative and far-right groups, also recognized María Corina Machado as the leader of the democratic forces in the country.

Despite the approval, an amendment by the Social Democrats, Liberals and Greens prevented that the resolution required a official recognition González by the European Union (EU) and its Member States.

This situation represented the first time in the current legislature that the European People’s Party paragraph with the extreme right instead of collaborating with the blocks to its left, which have historically reached consensus on decisions in the European Parliament.

The text also urged the EU and its allies to do “as much as possible” to facilitate González Urrutia’s assumption of the presidency on 10 January 2025. Within this, the MEPs stressed that “respect for the will of the Venezuelan people” is essential to restore democracy and address the country’s humanitarian and socio-economic crisis.

Finally, the International Criminal Court requested the inclusion of the investigation of the violations of human rights and arrests arbitrary elections that were carried out under the regime of Nicolás Maduro, who declared himself president-elect without complying with transparency requirements.
